Dick and I shared memories of high school together while our fathers were in the military, memories of college while we were civilians, memories of military life as we were both at Fort Benning in '67, and memories of early married life as we shared a home in Columbus, Georgia, for a few short months. Dick was a loving husband and a devoted father to their young daughter. Then I was off to Fort McClellan and Dick was off to RVN. My wife and I visited his wife and daughter in Florida just before I left for RVN in October 68. Our wifes were close in the weeks after I left as they shared common prayers for our safe return. Five weeks later, Dick was killed by isolated enemy fire ... the rest of my tour with the 1st Infantry Division seemed like an eternity. As I flew over terrain once occupied by the 25th, I couldn't help but wonder if I was close to where he died. I will never know for certain, but I cherish our memories and think of you often as I visit the Wall here in DC. |
