Killed during the helicopter insertion into LZ Gold. The men of Bravo Company will never forget his sacrifice and courage.
From a friend, |
In memory of Paul, growing up in Chicago at Fulton Playground and Lindblom HS, always in my mind and heart.
From a friend, |
Paul was from St. Basil's Parish in the Back-of-the-yards neighborhood. He was south-side Irish. He was among the first grunts to land in the clearing that was to become FSB Gold. Command-detonated explosives brought down several of the first choppers to arrive at the LZ. About a dozen young men lost their lives in the mess that ensued. Two days later, the base was attacked by what was described as "human waves" of NVA and VC. It was one of the most bitter fights in the whole war. God bless Paul McGowan, and all those soldiers who fought and died. They did it for each other. But, ultimately, they did it for us. I, for one, will always be grateful.
