Mega was a quiet man, a good soldier and a good point man. He died in an ambush on some long forgotten trail in the hardwood hills west of Quang Tri. He will be remembered and missed as long as we who served with him live.
From his Platoon Leader, |
We were so young but I will never forget Jimmy Mega. We danced together under the stars the night before he shipped out. Still filled with hopes and dreams. Our Fathers were cousins and so we knew we were somehow related by our Irish heritage and thought that to be pretty cool! I tried to talk him out of going. I knew people that would help him get away if necessary but he would not hear of that at all. He felt it was his duty to go as so many innocents of my generation did. He was brave and noble. A small group of us partied that night on the old boat celebrating life and friendship. I knew he would never return and that would be our night forever. It is almost 41 years now and as you can see he is not forgotten. Some people are simply unforgettable.
