Remembering
A 1970 obituary from the Roanoke Times showed that John and the company set up camp for the night. The company commander must have thought there was going to be trouble; he told the soldiers to set up some nearby rice bags as if they were sandbags. Some of the soldiers, including Myers, were sent out on a check outside the camp. They were ambushed, and Myers was hit in the leg with a rocket grenade. Myers was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital; his leg was amputated, but he later died from gangrene. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, Meritorious Service, and Meritorious Achievement. I was Johnny's next door neighbor. I was fifteen years old when he gave his life in the service of his country. John was a big man in stature. But more importantly he was big hearted man also. I used to go to his parents often to play and hang out with and his younger brother. John always had time for a younger kid , whether it was ride to the store or a ride home from school, it didn't matter he would do it for you. John left behind an infant son and loving wife and many close friends and neighbors, who have never forgotten him. The infant son is now my sons baseball coach. John Jr. has grown into a fine young man in his own right and I know that his dad would be very proud of him. I missed Vietnam by the skin of my teeth, but I served. I would like to think that I would have been as good of a soldier as I know John Samuel Myers was. John has two fine little grandsons too. Michael R. ShrewsburyJohn was survived by his wife Patricia (Allen) Myers, his mother Ellen Virginia (Marsico) Myers (1927-2005) and father Samuel George Myers (1924-2008). He was also survived by a brother Stephen Lee Myers, all from Roanoke area. John and his parents are buried at the Fair View Cemetery, Roanoke, Roanoke City, Virginia. - - The Virtual Wall, January 3, 2023
