Operation Lamar Plain began on 15 May 1969 when the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) sent a brigade task force south to Quang Tin Province in order to reinforce the Americal Division. First and Third Platoons of Charlie Company assaulted a small hill north of LZ Professional on 18 May 1969. During the assault Rudy Rossi fired the last round he had for his 90mm recoilless rifle. He then charged an NVA in a spider hole and tossed a hand grendade into the hole. He grabbed the dead enemy soldier's AK-47 and opened fire on another spider hole position. He was then mortally wounded by enemy fire. Rudolph Rossi did not die on Hamburger Hill as his family was led to believe, and as was apparently mentioned in an April 19, 2000, New York Post article by Neil Graves according to a post on another website.

I served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. I was with Rudy on the hill the day he was killed. We were best friends. He was one of the bravest guy's I knew. We were both from New York and we spent a lot of time together. I miss him to this day. I will never forget you, buddy. Rest in peace, Bro.
